The Oktoberfest Run For Beans 2012

Race Information

September 29, 2012 is the 25th time the Anchorage Running Club will have its Oktoberfest celebration and put on the Run For Beans.  For the past 15 years, Bean's Cafe and the Brother Francis Shelter have been the official benefactors of Oktoberfest and the Run For Beans.  Not only are the net proceeds of the race donated, but runners are encouraged to bring food and clothing to the event to help the cause. Participants can also donate to the charities at the on line registration web page.

The race starts on Second Avenue and is an out and back course along the coastal trail with 5K and 10K distance options.  This year, for the first time, the race will feature chip timing.  For those newer, younger runners there is also a ¼ mile untimed kids run.

Oktoberfest isn’t just a race, it’s a celebration, so participants are encouraged to wear costumes and make it an event.  Those participants that do come in costume get a one minute head start.   In addition to Bristol Bay Native Corporation, in 2012 we celebrate  Kaladi Brothers Coffee Company becoming a significant sponsor of the event so the runner gift will be a coffee house kit featuring a souvenir travel coffee mug (with a coupon for a free coffee from Kaladi Brothers) and journal book.  Supplies are limited and once they’re gone, they’re gone so register early to ensure you receive the gift.

The 10K race starts promptly at 9:00 AM and the 5K race starts at 9:05 AM (Remember participants in costume get a one minute head start).  The kids run commences immediately after the 5K start.  Participants start gathering at the lower level of the Snow Goose Restaurant at 7:30 and then walk down the hill to the start on 2nd Ave around 8:50 AM.

Race Registration and Bib Pickup

Race registration is now on line for the 5K and 10K.  The race fee is $25 for ARC members, $30 for non-members.  There is no registration for the kids run.  However, on the day of race, for any child participating in the kids run, the child’s guardian will be required to fill out a race waiver in order to receive the child’s bib. There will be a bib pickup and registration at the Skinny Raven Sports downtown locationon Thursday, September 27, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. There will also be race day registration and bib pickup for participants who cannot make it to Skinny Raven on Thursday. Race day registration will be from 7:30-8:30 AM in the basement of the Snow Goose Restaurant. Early registration closes at 6:30 PM, Tuesday, September 25. We encourage everyone to register early as the race fee increases $10 after early registration.    |Link To On Line Registration|

History of Oktoberfest and the Run For Beans

Shortly after being established in 1984, the Anchorage Running Club, ARC, annually honored the end of the summer running season with its Oktoberfest celebration.  The festivities traditionally included a morning run followed by a brunch in the Anchorage Hilton Hotel Ballroom.  With the impending arrival of snow, members started the tradition of bringing donations of food and clothing to the event to be given to Beans Café and the Brother Francis Shelter.  Over the years, with the coffee brunch and Beans Café being the major charitable cause of the event, the run portion of Oktoberfest gained momentum and became known as the Run For Beans.  Bristol Bay Native Corporation, BBNC, recognized the community value of Oktoberfest and the Run For Beans, so when it was no longer able to host the brunch at the Hilton Hotel, BBNC committed to financially sponsoring the event.  With financial sponsorship involved, the Anchorage Running Club decided to make the whole event a fund raiser for Beans Café and the Brother Francis Shelter.  Not only are participants encouraged to continue to bring food and clothing for the charities, but ARC now conducts the race emphasizing low costs and donating the net proceeds of the event to Beans Café and the Brother Francis Shelter.
